King’s spear (Asphodeline lutea) is a perennial herb of dry grassland and rocky, often limestone, ground across Mediterranean southern and eastern Europe, North Africa, and east to the Caucasus. Its root was roasted and eaten like a potato by the ancient Greeks, and its young shoots and sweetly scented flowers are also eaten.1
