The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America, and by extension the zone system used worldwide, into 13 zones based on average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. Each zone spans a 10°F (5.6°C) band. It’s a shorthand for cold-hardiness limits only, not a full climate description, and says nothing about summer heat, rainfall, or soil.
