Lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is a deciduous fern found throughout the north temperate zone, including Europe, to the mountains of India and tropical South America. Its young shoots are a bitter emergency food, not eaten regularly; the peeled, slow-baked rhizome is the more regularly eaten part.
