Common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a thorny deciduous shrub native across Europe, valued for its edible fruit and flowers and its long history as a heart-health medicinal. It tolerates drought once established and is a diagnostic shrub of cold semi-arid steppe scrub in Central and Eastern Europe.1
