Sea grape (Ephedra distachya) is an evergreen shrub of dune, steppe, and rocky habitats across southern Europe, including cold semi-arid Spain, east to central Asia.1 It is a source of the alkaloid ephedrine, used traditionally to treat asthma and other respiratory complaints, though it should only be used under professional medical supervision.
