White broom (Retama monosperma) is a deciduous, arching shrub native to North Africa and southern Spain, grown for its fragrant white pea-like flowers and tolerance of poor, dry soils. As a legume, it fixes nitrogen through root-nodule symbiosis with rhizobia.
