Fringed rue (Ruta chalepensis) is an evergreen shrub of rocky, limestone ground across the Mediterranean. Its bitter, aromatic leaves are used sparingly as a seasoning and the plant has a long history of medicinal use, though it is an emmenagogue and abortifacient and should not be used during pregnancy.1
