Hairy thorny broom (Calicotome villosa) is a deciduous, spiny shrub of dry stony scrub near the coast across the Mediterranean, especially common in areas after woodland clearance. As a legume, it fixes nitrogen through root-nodule symbiosis with soil bacteria, and is used for low hedging.1
