Thorny burnet (Sarcopoterium spinosum) is a perennial shrub native to the eastern Mediterranean (Italy to Greece, Tunisia, Libya, Turkey, and the Levant, extending to Iran), growing across a wide range from semi-arid to sub-humid Mediterranean conditions. Its root bark is a traditional remedy for diabetes and kidney stones, and the whole spiny bush is used as fuel and for making fences and sheep pens.1
