Spanish soapwort (Gypsophila struthium) is a low, mat-forming perennial herb of gypsum and alkaline soils in southern Europe, including interior Spain. Its Spanish name, jabonera, reflects a traditional use of the saponin-rich root as a soap substitute; the root itself is used as an external wash for skin diseases.
