Dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus) is a perennial herb related to elderberry, found across Mediterranean Europe. Unlike its shrub relatives it dies back to the ground each winter. The leaves and stems are poisonous; the cooked fruit is used sparingly as a flavoring.
