Straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) is a fast-fruiting tropical mushroom grown across Southeast Asia on paddy (rice) straw, often as a sideline to rice production.1

Inputs

  • Substrate: paddy (rice) straw is the standard and highest-yielding choice; cotton waste, dried banana leaves, and oil palm bunch waste are also used, though yields run lower than with paddy straw.1
  • Simple method: thoroughly moistened paddy straw left in a shaded spot (e.g. under trees), no building or equipment required.1

Outputs

  • Human food: a market mushroom crop integrated into rice-growing smallholdings across Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Malaysia.1
