European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) is a slow-growing, clumping palm native to the western Mediterranean, tolerant of poor, dry, rocky soils. Its young leaf buds and shoots are edible cooked, and its leaves yield a strong fibre used for cordage and brushes.
